about

After »Songs of Nico«, the re-release of the album by Michaela Meise and Sergej Jensen in the fall of 2019, Martin Hossbach is now re-releasing Meise's first solo album from 2010, which had originally appeared on Clouds Hill.

The album »Preis dem Todesüberwinder« (Praise Death’s Vanquisher) consists of hymns from the 16th to the 19th century, all of which are in the Catholic hymn book. Michaela Meise wrote in 2010: »For me, access to the songs was the way of folklore and chanson. As for the Greek Rembetiko recordings sometime in the 1950s, a microphone was set up in a village and someone pressed the record button, this time I pointed the microphone at myself and those old songs. It is not without reason that the lyrics were printed in English translation on the record sleeve, because they represent not only a Christian world of thought, but with poets such as Klopstock and Angelus Silesius also the lyrics of the epoch.

The studio Clouds Hill in Hamburg and Thies Mynther as producer have especially supported my desire to keep the recording simple. The songs were sung by me at the same time and recorded on the accordion, where we even could do without headphones. I am an amateur musician which can also be an advantage. Five years ago, I had already recorded the CD ›Songs of Nico‹ with Sergej Jensen, in which we musically reworked the compositions of singer Nico. This was already a music lover project and Sergej has always called us ›hobby musicians‹.

Also in ›Preis die Todesüberwinder‹ friends have come from the art context. The album cover is a work of the artist and filmmaker Oliver Husain, the cover inside a paper collage of the artist Nadira Husain. The guest singers Anna Voswinckel and Sonja Cvitkovic were with Nadira and me in a feminist group of artists, and Dirk von Lowtzow wrote art criticism and is a singer of the group Tocotronic. It would not have surprised me if, while singing the line ›Hallelujah, Jesus lives‹, his tongue had rotten black and crunched out of his mouth.

The fact that coincidentally in the Hamburg district Rothenburgsort, in which the Clouds Hill Studio is located, the singer Alexandra used to live, I learned only after the recordings. It was a good omen for me, as I always loved her as a chanson singer, just like Nana Mouskouri and George Brassens, who form the musical background on which this album has been built.«
