about

»Milagres« is a unique interpretation of Milton Nascimento’s legendary fifth solo album »Milagre dos Peixes«, originally released in 1973, by Tiganá Santana, Sebastian Notini and Ldson Galter.

Milton Nascimento, born in 1942, is one of the leading figures of Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), a post-bossa-nova-trend which revisited typical Brazilian and regional styles of music and combined them with influences coming from both jazz and rock. Tiganá Santana, on the other hand, was born 40 years after Nascimento, in 1982. He comes from Salvador de Bahia which is also the place where he recorded his version of »Milagre dos Peixes« for Martin Hossbach, together with the producer and percussionist Sebastian Notini and bass player Ldson Galter.

In 2017 Detlef Diederichsen and Martin Hossbach curated the festival »No! Music« for Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The topic was how resistance was articulated in music, from the protest song to the total refusal of musicians to continue participating in music life. When thinking about strategies for taking a clear position as a musician in autocratic societies, Milton Nascimento's »Milagre dos peixes« stands out as one of the most elegant examples. The lyrics for Nascimento’s songs, written by Nascimento and e.g. Fernando Brant and Ronaldo Bastos, were censored by the Brazilian military regime. Nascimento didn't play along. He recorded the songs again but instead of new lyrics he often simply used syllables: »la-la-la-la-la«. Almost every listener knew why. The blank lyrics sheets provided another clue.

»No! Music« took place in the fall of 2017, before Jair Bolsonaro was elected President of Brazil. But at this point there were already clear signs of change in the Brazilian society and a re-emergence of repressive and authoritarian forces became visible. It seemed necessary for Diederichsen and Hossbach to look for the relevance of Nascimento’s work, almost fourty years after its first release. It was Diederichsen’s idea to ask Tiganá Santana to reinterpret Nascimento’s album. He then brought Notini and Galter into the project.

Santana writes: »Dear all, I am delighted to inform you that the album ›Milagres‹, which Sebastian Notini (who also produced it), Ldson Galter and I built together, was released today on all digital platforms. This new album was conceived to honor the album ›Milagre dos Peixes‹, by the great Milton Nascimento, whose lyrics were censored in 1973. The idea, through the invitation of the German label Martin Hossbach, was that we could return, in our own way, to Milton's legendary work, in order to establish somehow, a parallel with the renewed rise of fascism in Brazil today. Hope you like it! We did it with great affection!«
